Marketing News & Hot Jobs Below 📰

Forrester's latest Fortune 500 analysis caught a lot of attention.

CMO representation has declined for the third consecutive year.

Only 36% of Fortune 500 companies now use the Chief Marketing Officer title, down from 49% a year ago.

A lot of people see that and reach the same conclusion.

Marketing is losing influence.

I don't think that's what's happening.

I think the title is shrinking because the mandate is expanding.

The CMO Role Isn't Disappearing

It's being absorbed into something bigger.

  • Chief Growth Officer

  • Chief Commercial Officer

  • Chief Customer Officer

  • Different titles

The same underlying trend.

More companies are asking one executive to own the entire commercial system instead of individual functions operating independently.

  • Marketing

  • Sales

  • Customer success

  • Sometimes revenue operations

  • Sometimes product feedback

The boundaries are changing because growth rarely breaks down along departmental lines.

The Old Operating Model Was Breaking

For years, marketing has been expected to drive growth while operating with only part of the system.

Sales owned customer conversations.

Customer success owned retention.

Product owned customer feedback.

Finance owned budgets.

Leadership set priorities.

Marketing was still expected to produce growth.

That's a difficult operating model.

When accountability and authority don't line up, something eventually changes.

Sometimes marketing loses influence.

Sometimes companies broaden the role so one leader can own more of the commercial motion.

We're seeing more of the latter.

The Numbers Support It

Organizations where marketing operates as a driver of growth, rather than simply a promotion function, significantly outperform those where it doesn't.

Leading marketing organizations averaged roughly 11% annual revenue growth.

Lagging marketing organizations averaged less than 1%.

The lesson isn't that marketing matters less.

It's that marketing creates more value when it's treated as a commercial function instead of a communications function.

What This Means For Marketing Leaders

The leaders who thrive won't be the ones protecting the traditional boundaries of marketing.

They'll be the ones expanding beyond them.

That means speaking in revenue instead of activity.

Owning customer intelligence instead of just campaigns.

Improving the handoffs between marketing, sales, and customer success instead of optimizing only inside marketing.

And becoming accountable for business outcomes, not just marketing outputs.

That's a bigger job.

It's also a far more valuable one.

The Bottom Line

The CMO title may become less common.

That doesn't necessarily mean marketing is becoming less important.

It may mean companies are finally recognizing that growth doesn't happen inside a single department.

It happens across the entire GTM system.

The leaders who understand that shift won't spend their time defending a title.

They'll spend it earning a broader mandate.

If You're Navigating This

One of the biggest conversations happening inside MarketingHQ right now isn't about marketing tactics.

It's about what marketing leaders need to become.

As the lines between marketing, sales, customer success, and product continue to blur, the leaders creating the most impact aren't just running marketing. They're shaping the entire go-to-market system.

That's not something most of us were taught. It's something we're all figuring out together.

If you're navigating that transition, you're not alone.
